|Seattle News Bites!
June 28, 2001
As usual, our local news missed lots of major stories and in this edition, we're going to provide some commentary and a few of the missed stories.
Why is it significant? Because it's the 1st time in history that a head of state has ever been extradited on war crimes. Even more important, it could open the door for others to be tried, and comes despite the Yugoslav Supreme Court's ruling that their Constitution prohibits the extradition of Yugoslav nationals.
But here's one, which the networks have been covering extensively during the past few days, our local news MISSED completely!
A first!--An attempted rescue at sea of a severely injured Right Whale, whose life is in danger, off the coast of Cape Cod, MA.Right Whales are one of the most endangered and live close to shore. This male whale, who is of breeding age and probably a father, had gotten entangled in some fishing line, with 4 inches now stuck in his mouth and maybe even lodging itself into his jaw bone.
Scientists, in an effort to rescue the animal, were going to attempt a first: operate on the still swimming whale at sea to remove the line, or if that didn't work, sedate the animal.
Unfortunately, these attempts have failed and weather hasn't been cooperating, so no further attempts will be made, leaving the whale to fend for himself. Because the whale's color has changed, scientists now fear that he is going to die!
